Instagram was born as a simple platform where to share photographs and, since its birth in 2010, until now has become a success. In instagram, we are already more than 1 billion people, who open our mobile devices and dedicate to watch or to share images and videos every day.

Learning to monetize is a challenge and can become very beneficial if done correctly, both organically and through advertising in Instagram.

Not only is it the place where celebrities can show off their own profile without relying on the paparazzi, but also with a little patience and perseverance anyone can become an influencer and achieve a return on their presence in this network. So today I want to tell how to grow and monetize your Instagram account in 7 steps based on the advice of Anthony Carbone, an instagramer with over 14 million followers.

How to grow and make money with Instagram

1. Decide between iOS or Android

Unless you are a professional photographer, you don’t need a "real" camera to succeed in Instagram. So the decision is fairly simple: iOS or Android?

iOS is perfect if you are going to instagram photos taken on your phone itself, since their cameras are superior (especially in low light) and the images have better resolution.

On the other hand, deciding on a phone with Android is ideal if you are going to process your photos on another device, as it allows you direct access to storage services in the cloud like Google Drive and Dropbox. If you save your photos in any of these sites, this is an option to be taken into account.

2. Install the appropriate apps

There are plenty of applications on the market that have been designed to be complementary to the Instagram App. These are the most recommended:

  • This predictive keyboard application will save a lot of time when writing your captions. Not only is it able to predict the combinations of words you use most often, but it also is able to learn the usernames and hashtags.
  • Add Watermark Pro (Android) or iWatermark (IOS). It is essential to put a watermark on your photos and make it very clear that they are yours. Remember: discreet logos work better than large ones, you shouldn’t overdo it!
  • KiK Messenger. Although Instagram already has its own private messages, this application is still very useful to filter spam and communicate with other users.

3. Configure and Protect Your Account

You're ready to open your Instagram.com account. The first thing you have to do is pay a little attention and those first impressions count a lot. So you should spend a little time going over these points:

  • Most users decide whether or not to follow a new account in seconds. To ensure you attract the right audience, it better be short (4 or 5 lines), which is free from any grammar or spelling errors and has no emojis. Professionalism is key.
  • Profile picture. The most important image of your entire account. It is better to not have any text or to keep it to a minimum.
  • URL. This is the only clickable address all your profile, so choose it well.

You already have a profile on the most monetized network in the world ... and also one of the most vulnerable to scams. So it doesn’t happen to you, you must protect yourself. My recommendation is that you create a unique email address for this network, add your phone number and connect with your Facebook profile to be protected against possible hacks.

4. Ready to post!

You are now ready to begin to impress the world with your photos. I recommend that you follow these tips to get the full potential of your content:

  • Do not use photos at a resolution lower than 1080 x 1080 pixels.
  • Take care with the description of your photos. A good text can turn a mediocre image into a viral one.
  • Use three to five hashtags that are specific and descriptive.
  • Tag other accounts that are relevant.
  • Search the best times to post: during morning from 8-11, afternoon from 2-4 and between 7 and 9. Avoid idle times on social networks!
  • In terms of frequency, start with one or two posts a day and when you get 5000 followers you should post 3-4 times a day. Once you’re up to 10,000, you can post up to 4-5 times a day.
  • With so many posts, you will need a service to program all of your publications: Hootsuite and Latergram work very well.
  • Finally, begin to interact with your followers as soon as possible. Do not forget that they are the key to your success.

5. Analytics

If you want to progress in Instagram, you need to know what happens to your account at all times: what type of content do your followers prefer?, What are your followers like? For this, I recommend you to use these three tools: Iconosquare.com (to follow the basic data of your account), SocialBlade.com (to study other accounts) and SocialRank.com (to know who your most influential followers are).

6. Time to grow!

Have you followed all the steps above, but still do not have all the fans that you’d like to have? Do not despair! You only need a little patience and to follow these tips:

  • Focus on a niche that nobody has covered yet. It seems difficult ... but every day there are a lot of original ideas on the Internet. Look for yours!
  • Consider paying other accounts to mention you. Before investing your budget, make sure that their audience is most suitable for you.
  • Beware of shortcuts! The bot programs that follow, give "likes" and comment for you do more harm than good, and Instagram increasingly pursues these more.

7. Monetization

The time has arrived to gather the fruits of your hard work and monetize your account has come, so to finish we will review all options to advertise on the network:

  • Sell part of the space of your captions. The least aggressive option.
  • Sell the URL of your biography, daily, weekly or monthly basis, or to accompany campaigns by post.
  • Do "likes" paid from other photos and videos.
  • The most interesting option for home users: join communities of influencers for brands to whom you can send offers.
  • To actively seek advertisers, follow accounts with a profile similar to yours and look at their followers promoted content.

1. Crowdsourcing Projects

Crowdsourcing, or mass collaboration, is all about asking a community or large group of people for ideas and contributions. These kinds of initiatives have been around for years, but Twitter is a particularly good place to promote them, and recruit new collaborators.

To make money on Twitter through Crowdsourcing, you need to convince your followers to finance your business or idea. This is normally done by collaborating with micro-patronage or crowdfunding platforms, such as Kickstarter (with time-limited campaigns to finance concrete projects) or Patreon (where patrons offer a monthly amount in exchange for regular content from their favorite artists or creators).

Crowdsourcing enables you to finance your most ambitious and can even provide your with regular income, but it has to been done right in order to work. If you decide to go with this option, be sure to check out success and failure stories of projects similar to yours before beginning to design your promotion plan.

2. Sell products

Selling products on Twitter to make money is not exactly a revolutionary idea, but surprisingly large amounts of people forget to include it in their strategies.

When it comes to selling on Twitter, “old school” marketing can be very effective – check out these examples:

  • Calls to action. If you want your followers to buy, don’t beat about the bush!
  • Many businesses have experienced amazing results with “Offer of the day” and “Limited stock” type campaigns.
  • How about an exclusive discount code for your followers?

In any case, keep in mind that using the more classic marketing techniques is no excuse for turning into a spammer. Publish a variety of different content and don’t overwhelm your followers or you will lose them.

3. Sell services related to Twitter

You use Twitter regularly and know your audience is out there. What do you think they need to improve their experience on this network? Make the most of this knowledge to create products and services related to Twitter.

Over the past years a great number of apps and websites have popped up that make the most Twitter’s API to offer all kinds of services, from analytics about the impact of tweets on users to customized hashtags. You can come up with your own genius idea, or improve a preexisting product by making it easier to use. Twitter Tech Marketing is an example, a technological solution that optimizes advertising on Twitter.

Another alternative to make money on Twitter is to help users develop their presence on this social network in exchange for a fee. Your social network expertise are worth money!

4. Use promoted tweets

You don’t need to be a celebrity to charge companies for your tweets. In places like Sponsored Tweets, you can find sponsors willing to pay you for your posts. The amount varies depending on your number of followers, if you are an influencer in any subject and other factors.

If you opt for this choice, keep these tips in mind:

  • Remember that making money on twitter with promoted tweets is allowed, but only if it is made very clear that it is promoted. You can use hashtags like #ad or #promo to follow this rule without wasting half your characters.
  • With this option, you are associating a brand with yourself, for better or for worse, so take care with the rest of your posts. Many people have been fired or lost their relationship with a sponsor due to a less fortunate tweet.

5. Generate new leads with the search tool

With 360 million active accounts all over the world, it’s quite likely that at least part of your target audience will be on Twitter. In order to find them, you have an amazing tool at your disposal: the search tool.

Searches on Twitter let you filter users according to their bios and tweets. For example, a company who sells coffee machines can search for potential clients by searching for “coffee lover”, “need a new coffee machine”, “my coffee machine broke”, “opinions on coffee machines”, etc. Use your imagination! Once you have pinned down potentially interested users, you can attract them with promotions and discounts adapted especially to their needs.

6. Host a contest

When it comes down to creating engagement, there is nothing more affective than offering a reward. If what you are aiming for, is to monetize a personal account, you can reach out to brands related to your audience and offer to promote their contest in exchange for a commission.

There are many fun and creative ways to get your followers interested in a contest. You can make them judges for a day, hold a crowdsourcing for new ideas or simply ask them to help you out with likes and retweets.

7. Use Youtube

Another way to profit from your social network knowledge is to create a tutorial channel on YouTube. Investigate your users’ most common questions and struggles and offer them step-by-step solutions. Once your videos have hit a certain number of views, you can make money from them by using AdSense.

As you can see, there are several options for increasing your income thanks to your Twitter account: your imagination is your only limitation! But, no matter what you do, keep in mind that monetizing your social media presence should be seen as a long-term investment. Your followers are your most valuable asset, so make them feel appreciated and consistently give them high-quality content. Only then will you get them to stick with you, and help you make money on Twitter.
